Back when refrigerators used mechanical defrost timers, Whirlpool’s 482493 was king. Actually, it still is pretty popular (the older refrigerators were built to last!). This timer kit replaced a bunch of different defrost timers for Whirlpool, Roper, Kitchenaid and Sears Coldspot brand refrigerators. It was a fairly dependable litte defrost timer too- power surges & low voltage didn’t bother it as much as the new defrost boards that are replacing mechanical timers (see GE’s WR55X10942 board failure for example).
Another thing that made Whirlpool’s 482493 kit unassailable was the fact that it was so affordable. Aftermarket companies couldn’t touch the quality and comprehensive replacement instructions that the original kit offered. Not at Whirlpool’s price point anyway. Until recently…
ERP’s 482493 comes with everything in Whirlpool’s 482493 and there is virtually no quality difference.
